I've just finished reading The Battle of the Sexes in Science Fiction by Justine Larbalestier and I enjoyed it. I liked how she tracked the participation of women in SF fandom from its early days and added a lot of context to the stories she discussed (mostly battle-of-the-sexes stories and Tiptree's stories, but she also discusses feminist utopias ( Read more... )

I was looking over my book reviews recently and I realized that all the ones that have their own entries tend to be negative and that this could give a negative impression. I actually read far more books that I like than I don't like and these authors could always use some good publicity. So, without further ado, here is a book that I like:

This is a tough book to review. I read Feed for calico_reaction's book club back in October and I was one of the few people who wasn't all that enthusiastic about it. I thought that it had some good parts, but overall I was unsatisfied. Here are my reasons why:

A while ago, a family member gave me a copy of The Deed of Paksenarrion, an omnibus containing the books of the Paksenarrion trilogy (Sheepfarmer's Daughter, Divided Allegiance, Oath of Gold). It's a trilogy about a female mercenary so that interested me. So, of course, I read the entire trilogy, and wanted to throw it at the wall by the end.
